Cryptocurrency, more specifically Bitcoin, had been created with the aim of having a borderless means of payment that would not get held back by governments.
While most famous cryptocurrencies have been able to achieve that, there is still a long way to go to achieve that goal, and that could only be done with time.
However, the wait did not stop – and is not going to stop – revolutionary ideas from coming to life, one of which is the concept of decentralized, borderless government that is known as Bitnation.
What is Bitnation?
Conceptualized in 2014, Bitnation has been in operation for a while now. It was founded by Susanne Tarkowski Tempelhof, who heads the operations of the decentralized virtual government.
Bitnation aims to propagate that the world should not be held back by borders or state governments, which it calls “service providers.”
According to Bitnation, any government that is currently running a state is basically providing its service to the citizens, and can thus be outperformed by other “service providers” if they do a better job.
To demonstrate what can be achieved if people take the responsibility to make their state a better place, Bitnation has completed various activities in the past. One of them was its demonstration to self-register land titles in Ghana, a country where more than 60 percent of the land does not hold any title and due to its unregistered state does not receive any attention by investors or developers.
In addition to that, Bitnation also holds the distinction of performing the first blockchain marriage, recording the first blockchain birth certificate, and also registering first refugees on the blockchain. It also introduced Estonia’s public notary through blockchain technology after partnering with the county for the initiative.
These initiatives have been lauded by the community so far, but since it is a theoretical concept and does not hold any jurisdiction if it does not get to be taken seriously by said governments, even if Estonia went as far as to partner with it to obtain assistance in technological solutions.
However, proponents of the platform, which now works as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), believe that since the concept is new, it should not be surprising if it gets to gradually change that mindset as more and more people join it over time. They also allude to the fact that it could happen once blockchain has a broader usage, a situation that would at least take a few years.
As of September 2017, Bitnation held around 2000 citizens since its conceptualization in 2014. The pace has indeed been gradual, but the initiative is one of a kind and is and is something that seems to be new and highly ambitious, this may be one to watch for a while.
